Translators’ Notes:

* The Korean title of the song plays on BTS’ Korean name, ‘Bangtan Sonyeondan’, by replacing ‘방/Bang’ with ‘흥/heung’, which is a mixture of ‘fun’ and ‘excitement’. The phrase ‘흥탄/heungtan’ can also be used as an adjective to describe someone who is excited.
2. This part of RM’s verse features wordplay on the words ‘정상/jeong-sang’, ‘일상/il-sang’, and ‘이상/i-sang’, which all share the common character ‘sang’.
The word ‘일상/il-sang’ means ‘everyday life’, but can also be split into the separate characters ‘il’, meaning ‘one’, and ‘sang’. This would literally translate to ‘one sang’. On the other hand, the word for ‘strange’ in Korean is ‘이상/i-sang’, which can be split into the separate characters ‘i’, meaning ‘two’, and ‘sang’. This would literally translate to ‘two sang’. As such, RM says that by adding one more ‘sang’ to everyday life, you end up being a little strange. In other words, ‘one sang’ (i.e. ‘il-sang’, meaning ‘everyday life’) + ‘sang’ = ‘two sang’ (i.e. ‘i-sang’, meaning ‘strange’.)
The word ‘sang’ on its own also means ‘prize’, which could be an additional layer to RM’s wordplay.
He then carries on this wordplay on the character ‘sang’ with his next two lines. The word ‘정상/jeong-sang’ can mean both ‘summit’ and ‘normal’ in Korean, and RM intentionally uses the same word in Korean to say that “If you’re just normal, you can’t reach the top”.
3. A reference to the 2011 video “hitman” bang Hit It Audition ment” where Bang PD does a rap to promote Big Hit’s upcoming rap competition. The members often refer to it jokingly.
4. Hoshikie is a cute nickname for Hoseok.
5. The actual word used here, ‘치키차카초’, describes the sound of brushing teeth and is also a possible reference to the OST from the 90's Korean cartoon show, ‘Fly Superboard’.
6. The Mandarin phrase “ni chi fan le ma” sounds very similar to a Korean swear word.
